About the Department:

The Post Graduate Department of criminology and Forensic Science started functioning from August -2018 at Shivagangothri Campus Davangere University, Davangere.  The First Batch Students have Successfully Completed Their Masters Degree and Passed out , second and third batches are pursuing. The department imparting knowledge to the students on compulsory five theory papers (Core papers) with one laboratory based practical in each semester. The department is inculcating curiosity among the students by motivating the importance of studies in the field of criminology and forensic science. In the coming days i.e. Third and fourth semester the institutional visits like police, prison, courts, forensic science laboratory, correctional institutional, medical colleges in particularly to the mortuary for autopsy etc. the department also would like to visit the institutes of women and child development, women reception centers and others.

Vision:

The department emphases to create an atmosphere in prevention of crime with the help of Law enforcing agencies like Police, Prosecution, Judiciary, prison and correctional institution and inculcate the students to develop themselves as law enforces.

Mission:   

To empower and develop the criminological competence of the students to serve as crime prevention, detection and correctional activist, resource persons, researchers in the field of law enforcing agencies besides, correctional staff.

 Objectives of the Department: 

 The department is going to empower and train professionally the students in the field of:

  1. The scientific understanding and analyzing of crime with its causes and prevention
  2. To study the victimological aspect of crime with victimological assistance and compensation.
  3. To explore the possible scientific aids and tools in a criminal investigation
  4. To understand and appreciate the rationale of the science of punishment towards reformation and rehabilitation.
  5. To update the knowledge of students in the modern methods of crime investigation.
  6. To create awareness in law-abiding among the lawbreakers and public in general
  7. To impart the knowledge of the criminal justice system with the help of law enforcement agencies.
  8. Ignite the minds of the students by unraveling the various spheres of avenues in the field of criminological research.
  9. To provide a qualified and well-trained postgraduate towards the agencies of Police, prison, forensic science, correctional institutions, and the judiciary.

Other activities :
Admission, Curriculum, and Examination: 

Eligibility: Candidate hailing from any discipline with an aggregate percentage of 50% (SC & ST students 40%) from any recognized University with completion of a graduate course is eligible for the course.

Selection: The entrance test is the mode of selection, in which 50% of the entrance test and 50% of the degree examination, an aggregate of both, will be considered for the selection. Besides, orientation counseling is also conducted to resolve the possible doubts of the eligible candidates willing to take admission to the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science.

 Curriculum:  
With regard to the curriculum, as per university guidelines, the Master of Criminology and forensic science a two-year course is offered on the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).  The curriculum is distributed into hardcore and soft-core subjects.

Examination: 
The examination system of the course involves four semesters. The examination pattern includes both theory examination and internal assessment.  The theory papers and practical papers carry 100 marks.

Curricular Program:
Institutional visits like Police, prison, Courts, Medical College, Forensic science laboratory and correctional institutions.

Fieldwork:
The students of criminology will be empowered by choosing any criminological issues on criminal cases, Police administration, prison reformation, rehabilitation of prisoners besides correctional institutions.

Participation in national Programs:
The department will take active participation in the legal aid awareness program in prison and correctional institutions, active participation with the department of police and public relations.
