University College of Visual Arts was established in 1964 in the name of Govt School of Arts & Crafts (SAC) in Davangere. This was the first of its kind in Karnataka state. It was under the control of Director of Technical Education, Bangalore. With a Government Order in the 1992, Government School of Art and Crafts was transferred to Kuvempu University and brought under its jurisdiction as its Constituent College, and was renamed as University College of Fine Arts, Davangere. The Diploma courses were upgraded to Bachelor Degree programmes, with specialization in four disciplines viz., (i) Applied Art, (ii) Painting, (iii) Sculpture, (IV) Animation & Multimedia. Post-graduation course (Master of Fine Arts) was introduced in Applied Art and Painting in the academic year 2003. In the Academic year 2005-06 the courses were modified as Bachelor of Visual Arts and Master of Visual Arts and Semester scheme was introduced in the place of Annual Scheme. From the academic year 2009 post-graduation in sculpture was introduced. In 2009 the college came under the jurisdiction of Davangere University and its Constituent College due to geographical location. It is the only constituent college of Davangere University and in Karnataka. The college is running Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Animation & Multimedia from the academic year 2019-20. This college also has been renamed as ‘University College of Visual Arts’, adopted Annual scheme curriculum. Semester scheme is adopted from the academic year 2021-22. NSQF Level-5 under graduate Diploma (UGD) Diploma in Digital Art (DDA) is introduced in the academic year 2020-21. This is skill based course.
The College offers courses of high skills and excellent career for students in the Central / State Govt. and reputed Private Sectors such as Museums, Art Gallery, Animation Studios, Advertising, Print Making, product manufacturing and software as Communication Designers / Graphic Designers / 2D/3D Animators / Photographers / Web designers / Artists and Art Teachers in Central / State Govt. and Private Colleges and Schools / Individual and Professional Painters / Sculptors.
Resource persons are invited in each department for every academic year for interaction, demonstration and discussion with students and staff. The students are encouraged to participate in major art exhibitions / Art camps / Seminars, Galleries advertising-agencies and many other national and state level art and cultural events.
In addition to this the College has NSS wing & Alumni Association; several art & socially useful activities are being conducted by them.
The college has a Digital Arts related well equipped Computer Lab and good number of rare collections of books of eminent, popular, renowned artists published by national and international publishers. The institution has rare collection of Art works of eminent Artists of Karnataka & other states. The wonderful Art gallery constructed recently supports the students in building the Art knowledge. The annual academic and cultural festival ‘CHITROTSAVA’ is being conducted and it is a platform for showcasing talent which encourages the students. Many of Alumni have occupied top positions and many of them are award winners in Central / State Govt, and reputed private / Public Sectors in India and abroad. The Art has no bond. The Students who have trained in this institution have achieved tremendous success in their carrier. The College has already completed 57 years.
The students of this college are being trained to become popular Artists and now are placed extremely well at the State and National Level and have been recognized at the International Level too. The Golden Jubilee celebration was organized by conducting National and State Level Art Camps.
