DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
About the Department
The Department of Studies in Microbiology was established in
01-09-1993, as one of the departments of P.G. Centre, under
Kuvempu University at JJM Medical College Davangere. The
staff and facilities of Department of Microbiology of
Medical College were extended to run the course
successfully, later moved to Shivagangothri campus in
December, 2001. The P.G. center got separated from Kuvempu
University and given the university status under the banner
of Davangere University on 18th August, 2009.

The department has grown up
and the curriculum was upgraded periodically. . The course
content was designed to cover all the aspects of
Microbiology and practical orientation for microbiological
methods. The course curriculum covers both basic and applied
aspects of Microbiology like Microbial Morphology, Taxonomy,
Physiology, Genetics, Environment Microbiology, Molecular
Biology, Agricultural Microbiology, Phytopathology, Medical
Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology,
Immunology and Biotechnology. The students are required to
submit a dissertation based on experimental/review work.
The basic training in microbiological methods and sound
theoretical background make the student an appropriate
candidate to take-up research program and also competent
enough to join Pharmacy, Diagnostics, Agriculture and allied
industries.
Till now 17
batches of M.Sc. students have
completed the course successfully.
In order to encourage the students to take up research
program every year the department is organising special
lecture series and seminars by inviting scientists from
reputed institutes and eminent scholars from other
universities. These programs were highly useful for
providing a platform for direct interaction of students with
eminent scholars. The staff members are regularly attending
different seminars/conferences workshops to upgrade their
knowledge to be imparted later for students. The students
who have finished successfully the M.Sc. course have joined
research institutes, industries and universities.

OHP, LCD Projectors - The faculty members use
teaching aids like Over Head Projectors and LCD projectors
for regular teaching in class rooms and the same aids will
also be provided to students for their seminars.
