BIOCHEMISTRY
About the Department
The Department of Studies in
biochemistry
was established in
01-09-1993, as one of the departments of P.G. Centre, under
Kuvempu University at JJM Medical College Davangere. The
staff and facilities of Department of
biochemistry
of
Medical College were extended to run the course
successfully, later moved to Shivagangothri campus in
December, 2001. The P.G. center got separated from Kuvempu
University and given the university status under the banner
of Davangere University on 18th August, 2009.
Courses Offered
M.Sc. in Biochemistry
M.Phil.
Ph.D.
Till now 17
batches of M.Sc. students have
completed the course successfully. The
department has adequate infrastructure for M.Sc. programme.
The course curriculum is designed to make the students
understand the structures, functions and interactions of
biomolecules, develop enthusiasm and curiosity for
understanding the simple to complex biochemical
transformations and events occur in biological systems.
The students are provided with practical training in
fundamental aspects like isolation, purification and
characterization of biomolecules, clinical biochemistry,
molecular biology, immunology and toxicology.
Many
students of the department have qualified in national level
examinations like Joint CSIR-UGC/NET, GATE and ICAR-NET
examinations. To orient the students to modern and
contemporary research in various branches of biochemistry,
seminars and symposia are organized in the department every
year by inviting renowned scientists and eminent scholars
from the reputed institutions in the country.
The
opportunities are plenty and wide-open for biochemistry
students. The department has strong alumni base, that
spreads all over the country and in overseas as well. Our
alumini are there in the R&D and Quality Control divisions
of prestigious organizations like Biocon, Astrazeneca,
Accenture, Strides-Acrolabs, Samilabs, Natural Remedies,
Arabindo Pharma. Some of our alumni are pursuing doctoral
research at premier institutions like IISc, GKVK, Bangalore,
CFTRI, DFRL, Mysore, some are pursuing doctoral research
within the department as project fellows, some are pursuing
post-doctoral research in abroad. Our alumni are permanent
faculty members in Mangalore University, Kuvempu
University, Tumkur University, Karnataka State Horticulture
University and also in Government Degree colleges in
Karnataka.
The faculty
members are actively involved in research, pursuing in the
frontier areas of Biochemistry such as Food and Drug
Nanotechnology, Cancer Biology, Protein Chemistry, Plant
Biochemistry and Plant Drugs. M.Sc., students of the
department are provided with theoretical orientation and
practical exposure in all these aspects.
The faculty
members of the department with their consistent efforts are
succeeded in bringing extra-mural research funding grants in
the form of major research projects to a tune of
Rs.2,00,00,000 (Rupees Two crore) from various funding
agencies of Government of India like DST, DBT, UGC, DAE-BRNS
and also Government of Karnataka.
Recently on
6th July, 2011, the Department has been
recognized and awarded with K-FIST (Karnataka Fund for
Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure) by
Vision Group on Science and Technology, Government of
Karnataka.
