About the Department

The Post-graduate Department of Commerce was started in 1979
as one of the two departments, which were started along with
the establishment of Post- graduate center at Davangere. The
Commerce Department was started in this area, which is
considered to be an important commercial city in the state,
and it would benefit the students of this area. The P.G.
Centre was under the control of University of Mysore. When
the Kuvempu University was formed in 1987, the P.G.Centre
was brought under the purview of Kuvempu University, so also
the Department of Commerce. However, the center got
separated from Kuvempu University and given the university
status under the banner of Davangere University on 18th August,
2009.
The department during its 32 years of existence has not only
generated new courses, post graduates and doctorates, but
has also supplied trained manpower to other P.G.
departments.
Today the
department can boast of 4 programmes: M.Com. MAF., M.Phil
and Ph.D. with more than 250 students and the work for 10
full time teachers.
The department admits every year 70 students to the M.Com.
programme, 40 to MAF. On an average so far, in the 32 years
history of the department, it has produced around more than
1,000 M.Com graduates. 70% of these post graduates have
passed in First Class. They are occupying prestigious
positions in the government departments, banks, development
finance institutions, colleges, universities, companies and
other institutions.

Department has started separate cells for placement,
Entrepreneurship Development and Extension activities.
Placement cell has been bringing out placement
brochures, organizing pre-placement training and campus
recruitment.

Department has initiated Alumni association which has a
wide network, strong affiliation, takes active part in
placement activities

Teachers and students work in teams. Team spirit is
manifest in every activity of the Department.

Department has been organizing Seminars, Workshops,
Special Lecturers, Industrial Tours for the benefit of
students and teachers.

Facilities available in the
Department for Students:
Internal Library:
The Department has an Internal Library for the
benefit of students with a book collection of more than
1,700 books, besides subscription for nearly 16 journals and
magazines related to commerce and management education.
UGC sponsored Computer Laboratory:
The UGC-sponsored Computer laboratory is
provided with 12 computers with Uninterupted Power Supply
and Air-Condition and also necessary software for Commerce
and Economics students. The lab is exclusively for the
student utility. The students are taught Tally package,
Computerised Accounting, E – Commerce and Web
Designing, Basic Management Information Systems and Computer
Application in Economic Analysis. Students are provided with
practical training pertaining to these aspects in the
computer laboratory.
Teachings Aids:
OHP, LCD Projectors - The faculty members use
teaching aids like Over Head Projectors and LCD projectors
for regular teaching in class rooms and the same aids will
also be provided to students for their seminars.
